Flooring Calculator: Estimate Square Feet and Boxes
Free flooring calculator to estimate room area, extra material for cuts and how many flooring boxes to buy.
How to estimate flooring
Measure the room length and width in feet. Multiply them to find square footage, add an allowance for cutting waste, and divide by the square footage printed on your flooring box. Round up to whole boxes.
Example estimate
A 15 by 12 foot room is 180 square feet. Adding 10% waste gives 198 square feet. If each box covers 20 square feet, you need 10 boxes.
Before you buy materials
Complex layouts, diagonal installation, patterns and damaged pieces can require more extra material. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s instructions. All results are planning estimates, not professional construction advice.
Measure irregular rooms
Divide an L-shaped or irregular floor into smaller rectangles. Multiply each section's length by width, then add the areas. Measure closets or alcoves separately if they will receive flooring.
Allow for cutting waste
The calculator's default 10% allowance is a planning starting point. Diagonal patterns, complex layouts, or products with pattern matching may need more. Divide the total square footage by the coverage stated on each box and round up.
Common questions
Why does the result round up?
Flooring is sold in whole boxes, so a partial box is rounded up to the next full box.
Does it include underlayment?
No. Check whether your chosen product requires separate underlayment, transitions, or trim.
Should I buy spare planks?
Keeping matching spare material may help with future repairs; consider product availability and storage.
